Noiz hat / beanie tutorial (+ Links to patterns)

Description

I made Noiz’s hat for a friend’s birthday and thought I might post how I made it. I made my own pom poms, dyed the yarn & painted the green details. BTW this is my second attempt haha. The colour is slightly inaccurate but you can add white to the paint to lighten it (I was running out of time and paint) Sweating a little...

Here is a link to the tutorial on tumblr

Note: The tutorial on tumblr has WIPs pictures so might be easy to follow.

------------------
Materials:

  • Black fabric - I used fleece
  • White fabric - I used white wool
  • Yarn - I couldn’t find the colour I wanted so I used white to dye myself
  • Fabric paint - I used acrylic paint + fabric medium
  • Badge - I bought a 7.5cm badge from a party store on ebay
  • Yellow fleece for details - you can use beads

Badge

I basically modified a badge by removing the covering then painting the whole thing yellow. I then printed out details and glued it on then cover the whole thing in clear book covering to make it waterproof.

I used the template here.

Tassels

I braided the white yarn and secured with knots. I then dyed the yarn using a tutorial from here. It’s really easy! I made sure to cover parts I don’t want dyed with masking tape. I dyed each several times to get the colour I wanted.

Pom poms

There are plenty of tutorials to make these from yarn on the Internet. Once done I tied and glued them to the ends of the braids.

Hat base

I slightly modified the pattern of a fleece hat with ear flaps from here, I made the main piece taller & the top pieces more narrow (basically made them triangles instead of the curved bell shape since the main piece is covering most of the head anyway). I cut each pattern piece from black fleece but only cut the main piece from the white wool fabric to make the top less bulky.

TIP: use graph paper to draw the patterns as it’s easier to work out how to space the details apart too.

Hat details

I used masking tape as stencils on the main piece of the hat. Below shows what it looks like with only 1 layer of paint mixture (acrylic paint + fabric medium). It took about 4-5 layers to make it opaque.

TIP: after taking the masking tape off you might need to use a black laundry/fabric marker to make it neater.

Once done I punched little dots from yellow fleece with a leather puncher and sewed them on by hand.

Putting it all together

I then sewed everything together, making sure I don’t forget to sew on the braids (2 with pom poms on the ear flaps + 1 with a free white tail on the top).

I probably didn’t include as much information as I’d like and this seems more like a mini walkthrough but this is already really lengthy.

Self-reflection: if I had to do it again I’d lighten the green on the hat for more accuracy, make the pom poms thicker, make the blood thicker on the badge, and make the top of the hat narrower. I’m lucky my friend is not a perfectionist ( ^_^ ;)
